My ALS Journey (20/n): Aids

Today, I would like to introduce all the important aids that allow me and Beatrix to get through the day

>> My ALS Journey so far <<

Aids

Caregivers

Of course, caregivers are not aids, but they still belong on this list. I can now have 24/7 care. This care is an incredible help for us.

Electric wheelchair

I now have my electric wheelchair. It can be steered with a kind of joystick. My carers must do this because I can no longer operate the joystick. This is not an easy task as the chair weighs 190 kilos. In the next few weeks, the electric wheelchair will be equipped with an eye control system, which I look forward to.

Mobilization

Unfortunately, I can no longer take a step and use a mobile lift. With this, we managed to get from the bed to the electric wheelchair and onto the shower chair.

Care

I am showered and went to toilet on my shower chair.

Work

I operate my computer with two mice and my voice. Windows Access works very well in English but has some problems in German, so it is almost unusable. For example it does not recognize control commands such as unten or Raster.

In the next weeks, I will experiment with eye tracking.

What is still missing

  • Installed ceiling lift
  • Care bed
  • Car for my electric wheelchair

Presentations

I will provide an “Introduction to C++26” on C++ online. My talk will be from 14:30 to 15:30 Wednesday, 26 February UTC.
