My ALS Journey (13/n): Next Steps

Ice Bucket Challenge

The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving the pouring of a bucket of ice water over a person’s head, either by another person or self-administered, to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, also known as motor neuron disease or Lou Gehrig‘s disease) and encourage donations to research. I’m happy to announce that after 10 years the Ice Bucket Challenge seems to be revived.

Here’s the Ice Bucket Challenge from Prof. Dr. Thomas Meyer, head of the ALS outpatient clinic, which he founded at the Charité Berlin in January 2002. I highly appreciate his work. Therefore, the money for the last donation campaign went to Charité Berlin.

From Classes to Mentoring

I’m sad to say that in 2025, I will no longer offer three-day classes. Due to my ALS, this is too exhausting for me. But I will enforce my Mentoring. Mentoring is way more impactful than classes. Therefore, I’m happy I can provide Mentoring for you in the following years.

If you still want a class, please call me: at rainer.grimm@ModernesCpp.de. We will find a solution.

    Move Semantics

Nine months after the ALS diagonals, we solved almost all the changes—or, I should say, Beatrix solved them. But there’s always a new challenge. I cannot leave my apartment and have been outside for the last eight months. We need another car that I can drive in directly with my electric wheelchair. I want to visit friends, go to beer gardens, or give nearby talks.

You may wonder, why I have a cat picture here. This is Pepi, our cat. She stays, out of solidarity, also inside our apartment.
